A 41-year-old man admitted stealing a $300 camera when he appeared in Magistrates' Court yesterday.
Senior Crown Counsel Carrington Mahoney said that on September 25, Raymond Spence walked into Leisure Time Store and took an Astak 906D camera, with the security tag still attached, from the shelf and placed it in a white plastic bag.
As Spence was leaving the store, he picked up a DVD, which also had security tag attached and attempted to walk out, but when he went through the security doors the alarm went off. He held up the DVD, gave it to the cashier and left the store.
The store manager contacted Police and they viewed the security DVD that showed Spence placing the camera in the plastic bag. Police later arrested Spence.
Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner questioned him about the incident. Spence said: "My behaviour is the residue of my past life. I'm currently serving three years in prison and I'm trying to change my life around."
He was sentenced to 12 months to run concurrent with the three years he is currently serving for a separate offence.
