Teen admits having cannabis
An 18-year-old Pembroke man admitted in Magistrates' Court to possessing 0.28 grams of cannabis when Police officers stopped him after he tried to run away.
Crown counsel Nicole Smith told the court, Shannon Mello, of Middle Terrace, was speeding on a motorcycle on Parsons Road, Pembroke, on August 18, 2006 and was spotted by officers on mobile patrol.
Realising this, Mello swerved, but collided with a Police motorcycle. Police noticed him to be nervous and his eyes were glazed, but they smelled no alcohol on his breath.
They searched him under the Misuse of Drugs Act and found a cigarette in his left pocket that contained plant-like material.
Last week, Mello was picked up on a warrant for not showing up in court on March 7.
Defence Lawyer Elizabeth Christopher told the court he has a clean record and is currently studying to obtain his GED diploma and asked Acting Magistrate Tyrone Chin to hand down a conditional discharge.
However, Mr. Chin ordered a report for Mello and ordered him to reappear on December 5, when he will be sentenced accordingly.
