Teen charged with throwing rocks at Sunday's fracas at Devonshire Rec
A teenager has been charged with weapons offences after an alleged violent incident at a football match on Sunday.
A large group of youths armed with machetes, clubs and rocks are said by prosecutors to have engaged in a standoff with Police and spectators at the Wolves vs Paget Lions game at Devonshire Recreation Club.
With rumours circulating at the ground that a gunshot was heard during the incident, the afternoon match was called off a few minutes before full-time for safety reasons.
Yesterday, 16-year-old Sanchey Kijuan Grant appeared before Magistrates' Court charged with possession of an offensive weapon in the form of stones and rocks.
He is also accused of being armed with the stones and rocks "in such a manner as to cause terror to persons present," and behaving in a threatening manner.
Grant, of North Shore Road, Hamilton Parish, pleaded not guilty to all three charges and will go on trial at Magistrates' Court on December 12.
In a press release shortly after the incident, Police said officers saw around 20 youths brandishing bladed articles and approaching the gate of the club in an attempt to enter the ground.
The press release said additional Police officers attended the scene, and the youths escaped on foot.
A spokesperson subsequently said Police records did not reflect accounts of the incident given by members of the public that the group reached the spectators.
He also quashed speculation about a gunshot being heard.
The account of the allegations against Grant outlined by Crown counsel Robert Welling yesterday spoke of fewer people involved, and revealed details of the alleged incident not previously publicised.
"The prosecution says this defendant was one of a large group of approximately 15 young men who entered the grounds on motorcycles or auxiliaries and engaged in an exchange with two spectators," said Mr. Welling.
"They exited, then returned armed with a variety of weapons — a machete, clubs, bottles, and in the case of this defendant, two rocks.
"They were seen to advance on the two men that they had earlier engaged in conversation. They were plainly acting in a threatening manner.
"Despite being confronted by a Police officer and told to drop their weapons, that group continued to advance, including a man with a machete.
"They only retreated when the sound of sirens was heard."
Mr. Welling said Grant was arrested the following day.
While he initially claimed not to have been present at the football ground, the prosecutor said that during a Police interview later, he said he was present but not part of the group.
Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo bailed Grant in the amount of $5,000 with two like sureties, and imposed an 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. curfew on him until his trial.
