Ten to be honoured at Bravery Awards

Heroes are everyday people from all walks of life whose extraordinary actions make the difference between life and death.

On Wednesday, Acting Governor Mark Capes will honour ten residents of the Island for acts of heroism at the annual Bermuda Bravery Awards ceremony.

Those to be honoured at Government House include a woman who grabbed a little girl from under the wheels of a runaway carriage at Harbour Nights on April 25.

The carriage careered into the crowds along Front Street after two horses bolted, leaving carnage in their wake. Nineteen people including a young boy were injured in the stampede.

Other recipients of the cedar-framed certificate for heroism will include rescuers of swimmers caught in rip currents; the re-capture of another runaway horse in Hamilton; a non-swimmer who commandeered a punt off Flatts Bridge to save two drowning children; and Police and Fire officers who talked a depressed woman down from a high ledge, preventing a suicide.

The names of the rescuers were nominated for the award by members of the public and emergency services over the past year, and were judged by a cross-section of Bermudians in the Bermuda Bravery Awards Association.

The Association states its mission as: "To establish a more positive and caring approach to recognising those who go above and beyond the call of duty in helping others during life-threatening situations."
