Text trick led to park fight

A teenage girl has admitted to assaulting another girl after luring her to a park on the pretence that she would meet a boy there.

Garinna Cann, 19, of Sunset Lane, Pembroke pleaded guilty to charges of assault when she appeared in Magistrates' Court yesterday.

The court heard from Crown counsel Larissa Burgess that in January of this year Sasha Mancini was walking along Queen Street and noticed she had four missed calls on her cellular phone.

Ms Mancini texted the number back to see who the missed caller was and she received text back saying that it was Jason and to meet him in Par-la-Ville park.

Ms Mancini and her friends went to the park to meet the person and noticed Cann and her friends standing in the park.

When Ms Mancini neared Cann and her crew, Cann grabbed her shirt and punched her and said: "You must be stupid if you think this wasn't a set up."

Cann continued to attack Ms Mancini until she and her friends were able to break free and get away.

Ms Mancini was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital where her wounds were treated and she was released.

She and her mother went to the Police station to make a formal compliant against Cann and Cann was subsequently arrested.

Cann has previous convictions of similar matters.

When Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner asked Cann if she had anything to say, she said: "She [Ms Mancini] was running her mouth, talking slick but I didn't set her up."

Mr. Warner said: "You have done this before and you didn't learn your lesson."

Cann has served three months in custody so far and was released yesterday on two years probation, during which time she is to engage in rehabilitative services under the direction of Court Services.

She was also given a curfew between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m.
