The Microbiology Specialists Report
The leaked July 28 report from Microbiology Specialists Inc. lists scores of problems with the CedarBridge Academy building and makes a raft of recommendations for improving its environment.
Findings include:
[bul] Fungi, mould and bacteria associated with potential health problems found in samples taken at the school.
[bul] Air conditioning units in the school having “heavy contamination” meaning algae and fungus is present in re-circulated air.
[bul] Air conditioning being shut off at night, at weekends and over the summer causing ceiling tiles to become contaminated.
[bul] Lack of proper ventilation, circulation and dehumidification causing build-up of moisture and contamination.
[bul] Many of the windows having gaps potentially allowing hot, humid air and water to be sucked into the school.
[bul] “Filthy” and rusting ceiling fans which are too far from the ceiling and have too few and too small blades to move the air.
[bul] A “filthy” kitchen which “would not pass any kind of an inspection by the health department food services division” and has a refrigerator that leaks and “stinks”.
[bul] A “filthy” design and technology building and “extremely filthy” drama room with “food and trash everywhere”.
[bul] Curtains heavily contaminated with mould in the gymnasium: “an area where students’ respiratory systems are stressed by athletics”.
[bul] The problems could have been mitigated “in time to start school” in September.
