What is Non-Hodgkin's lymphona?
Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is a disease that attacks the cells of the lymphatic system — the body's blood filtering tissues that help to fight off infections.
Like other cancers, lymphomas occur when cells divide too much too fast.
That rapid division may cause the disease to spread to other organs in the body.
In Lori Mello's case the cancer collected in her lymph nodes, which as a result, have become swollen.
Even for people who are not cured of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, a remission can sometimes be achieved.
Successfully treated patients can live normal or near-normal lives for many years.
The main difference between non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and Hodgkin's lymphoma is a particular type of abnormal cell.
In Hodgkin's lymphoma a Reed-Sternberg cell can be seen under a microscope, a cell that is not visible with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
Lori's family and friends are still working hard to raise money to help save her.
Cheques made payable to Lori Mello can be sent to: 26 Harvest Lane, Hamilton Parish CR 01.

Miss Mello's supporters hope to start a charitable foundation sometime next year.
They say when Lori beats her cancer, they'll use the foundation to assist others stricken with cancer.
