Woman driver banned

A Paget woman denied driving while impaired but admitted to refusing to give a sample of breath when she appeared in Magistrates' Court.

Jennifer Rego, 44, of Southcote Lane, was arrested on February 15 for impaired driving and refusing to use the alco-analyser.

The court heard from Crown counsel Robert Welling that at 8.01 p.m., officers attended a damage-only accident in Paget where the defendant identified herself immediately.

When she stepped out of the car, she was unsteady on her feet and her eyes were glazed. Asked if she had been drinking, Rego said: "Only a couple glasses of wine."

When officers told her she was being arrested for impaired driving, she refused to take the breathalyser test and said: "I got rights".

Rego was taken to the Hamilton Police Station and again refused the test.

Mr. Welling dropped the charge of impaired driving.

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner gave Rego a $1,000 fine, disqualified her from driving for one year and handed her ten demerit points.
