Hoteliers concerned by attacks on tourists

Attacks on tourists prompted questions from hoteliers when they met Government and Police leaders at a conference.

Police Commissioner George Jackson told the Hotel Owners Spring Summit that preventative measures being put in place included increased visibility, increased liaison with hotels and cruise ship security teams and a new crime prevention brochure in all hotel rooms.

The news comes after several robberies in recent months, some of which have left visitors injured.

According to a statement from the Department of Tourism, Bermuda Hotel Association CEO John Harvey also expressed concern about the maintenance of Bermuda's public beaches.

After hearing details of the current weekly cleaning schedule, the group agreed that increased steps are needed to combat littering on the beaches and Railway Trail.

In other news, it was announced that Warwick Long Bay has been granted permission for a beach bar, offering light food, drink and entertainment.

In addition, Bermuda Industrial Union president Chris Furbert revealed that it has recently ratified a new three-year contract agreement with the Bermuda Hotel Association.
