targets of abuse from a man who emerged from the house, a Magistrate hard this week.

Jerome Crockwell, of Cooks Hill Lane, Sandys Parish, denied using offensive words. But he was found guilty in Magistrates' Court on Monday and fined $300.

P.c. Steven Donnelly told the court that on May 18 he heard shouting, screaming and glass breaking coming from Cooks Hill and went to investigate.

He said he saw Crockwell, who swore and ran into a house. Crockwell emerged later and swore again, telling officers: "Come and get me if you can,'' said P.c. Donnelly.

He added Crockwell ran off when told he was under arrest for using offensive words.

Crockwell told the court there had been an "altercation'' in his house involving his father.

"I decided to get away from the house -- I didn't want to go to war with my father. He was already breaking glass and carrying on.

"Before I could even leave my premises there was a Police car backing into my yard. It almost ran into me.'' Crockwell said he tapped on the car to alert the driver he was there. Police might have thought he was trying to vandalise the car, he said.

"Both the officers proceeded to jump out of the car and came running towards me,'' he said.

"Not wanting any confrontation with the law after having been through what I had been through with my father, I turned and ran.''
