Big international names in golf course design like Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Tom Fazio and the UK's PGA Golf Management are associated with the four bids.

Now the proposals will be evaluated for at least two months before final submissions are made to the new Land Development Company.

Finance Minister Grant Gibbons -- who heads up the Land Development Transition Office -- said last night: "Our success in attracting high-quality developer interest puts Bermuda in an excellent position to make a selection that is best for the future of the Island.

"It is now vital that we select a proposal which provides good jobs and creates new career opportunities for our people, gives new strength to our tourism industry and helps the economy recover from the loss of the military bases.'' A total of six development teams were shortlisted, with five submitting detailed plans. All the teams include Bermudian entrepreneurs among the partners.

One team -- which has not been named -- may have to be disqualified on technical grounds related to the tender process.

The remaining proposals are all for resort-type developments centred on golf courses but also including hotels, cottage colonies, marinas, shopping developments.

One of the developers, BEAM Ltd., has submitted a second proposal for a 42-acre site including a film and recording studio, restaurant, arts centre and a 2000-seat concert arena.
