BIBA and government have `fruitful' meeting

spent a day and a half discussing ways of boosting the industry, which is Bermuda's second biggest income source.

Attended by Premier the Hon. Sir John Swan and top business leaders, the meeting was part of efforts by Bermuda International Business Association over the last 15 months to analyse the industry and form plans for development.

"The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the future of the industry and to ensure that the two essential partners involved in it (Government and business) are working towards common objectives,'' said BIBA chairman Mr. Dick Butterfield. "Important problems and challenges were discussed.'' Exactly what came up at the meeting was being kept under wraps for the time being. But probable developments in the pipeline include further honing of the Companies Act, amendments to trust legislation, and moves to develop the Island as an international arbitration centre.

"It was a very successful meeting,'' Sir John said last night. "I must commend the international sector and my colleagues for what I consider to be a very dynamic and far-reaching set of discussions that I think Bermuda will be better for.'' Work done by BIBA will be dovetailed into that being done by the Premier's employment task force and his commission on competitiveness.
