BIU files official Grotto complaint
against Grotto Bay Hotel's refusal to abide by a disputes settlement board's award.
After a meeting yesterday with Grotto Bay unionised staff, union president Mr.
Ottiwell Simmons MP said: "They've instructed the union to file a complaint to the Minister of Labour against Grotto Bay for the hotel management's non-compliance with the ruling of the board''.
The Essential Industries Disputes Settlement Board, in its first ruling last month, ordered a return to mandatory gratuities, the old lower pay scale, and other terms and conditions of the expired hotel workers' agreement with the Hotel Employers of Bermuda.
Grotto Bay has stressed that it would not comply with the ruling and the legislation that created the disputes board last year left no clear way of enforcing decisions.
But Mr. Simmons maintains that the hotel is "legally bound and liable to abide by the award'' and "Government's responsibility to let them know that they must''.
