incurring debts of more than $1,000 with bounced cheques.

Kenneth Earl May, of Upland Road, Devonshire, pleaded guilty to incurring debts of $645 and $375 at Brightside Guest Apartments.

Prosecutor Sgt. Donald Grant said that May booked into Brightside on February 10 to 14 and February 26 to March 4, and paid with personal cheques that later bounced.

May was stopped at the Civil Air Terminal on March 22, as he attempted to leave the Island.

"I was not aware of the lack of funds in my account,'' May said. "I just put on a fashion show that didn't work out and I lost a lot of money. I thought I had enough to pay.'' May was bailed at $1,000 with a like surety and ordered to surrender his travel documents.

Magistrate the Wor. Will Francis ordered May to return to court on April 27.

"When you come back, I hope you have paid off your debts.'' IMPAIRED DRIVER HAD CANNABIS CTS Impaired driver had cannabis A 27-year-old man yesterday admitted charges of driving while impaired and possessing cannabis.

But Christopher Pond, of Pitts Bay Road, claimed the cannabis was not his.

Prosecutor Sgt. Donald Grant said that in the early hours of March 11 there was an accident on North Shore Road in Devonshire that caused a traffic hold-up.

Pond was driving west on North Shore Road, and drove straight at a Police officer who signalled for him to slow down, causing the officer to dive out of the way, Sgt. Grant said.

Pond continued driving right up to the accident, when a Police officer was able to reach inside the car and grab the keys. He noticed a strong smell of alcohol and saw that Pond's eyes were glazed.

Pond was taken to the Police station where he refused a breathaliser test. The cannabis was found in a jacket in the car.

Pond was fined $800 and disqualified from driving for 12 months.
