in a major coup for the organisers of the Bermuda Regional tournament.

Bob Hamman from Texas is reckoned to be bridge's all-time greatest player, while Eric Rodwell and Jeff Meckstroth from Florida are the world's current best pair.

There is no prize money in the Bermuda Regional, so organisers are thrilled to have attracted these three professional players who make their living from playing big money bridge games.

Press officer Edna Clay said she believed the success of last year's Orbis World championships, held at the Fairmont Southampton Princess, had been the magnet which attracted these elite players to return.

"To see these three top professionals who normally only play international or national matches here when there is no money to be won is really a huge compliment,'' said Mrs. Clay.

The tournament, which attracts players from the United States, Canada, Mexico and Bermuda, is being held at the Sonesta for the first time due to refurbishment being carried out at the normal venue, the Fairmont Southampton Princess.

Tournament organisers embarked on an international marketing blitz to participating countries to ensure there was no fall-off in attendance as a result of the tournament changing venues.

Mrs Clay said she was delighted that almost 600 players -- 475 from overseas and 100 locals -- will be appearing this year.

While attendance is slightly down on last year, numbers have been boosted by people who caught the tail end of the world championships before attending the tournament.

She believes the leaflet, which was mainly financed by Sonesta, has contributed to the good numbers this year.

The tournament begins tomorrow and runs until January 28.

Management at Sonesta are delighted to be able to cash in on the unexpected business at a slow time in the year.
