Mayor Henry Hayward said St. George's officials had been meeting with Police and said the local station needed more officers.

Three men were beaten up in separate incidents in King's Square during the early hours of Wednesday morning. In one attack, a good Samaritan who tried to stop a gang of ten youths beating up a man was himself assaulted and robbed.

Mr. Hayward said: "We are satisfied with Police cooperation, but they do not have enough people, we are urging more foot patrol in town''.

Mr. Hayward also said he hoped that the recents incidents of violence were isolated ones and would not become a problem.

Police reported yesterday that a 26-year-old St. George's man said he was leaving a pub in King's Square around 3 a.m. on Wednesday when he saw ten youths beating up a man.

He proceeded to pull one of the youths away and confronted him about the overwhelming odds. He said he was then cursed.

St. George's attacks Moments after walking away the youth he had exchanged words with approached him and began to push and shout at him.

The two began to fight and two more youths joined in. All three of the young men eventually fled on foot.

On his way to St. George's Police Station he noticed his wallet, containing an undisclosed quantity of cash and three credit cards was missing.

Police spokesperson Evelyn James Barnett said a search of the area was made but it did not turn up the suspects.

However, the victim gave a description of the assailant and Police inquiries were continuing.

The 30-year-old American visitor first assaulted by the group of men was found by Police at 3.30 a.m. sitting on a bench. His nose was bleeding and he had bruises on his hands and feet.

He said the group of about ten men attempted to rob him a half hour earlier.

He said someone demanded money, and when he refused he was beaten over his head and body.

The victim was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for treatment of a facial fracture.

Earlier, an 18-year-old cruise ship passenger was sitting outside a bar in King's Square around 3 a.m. was assaulted.

Two men walked up to the visitor and took some cash out of his T-shirt pocket and walked away.

When the man challenged the thieves, he claimed they threatened him. One then punched him in the face and walked away.
