End have been thwarted for the time being, thanks to the generosity of the Sandys Rotary Club, Carole Holding Ltd. and the Bank of Bermuda.

The centre, which began operating on a limited basis last year, is located on Boaz Island.

There is a basketball court outside, while video arcade games and table tennis facilities can be found inside.

Sandys Rotary Club president Sen. Gary Pitman said his club became initially involved last June when the club's community service director Mr. Joe Tee visited the centre.

"He was quite excited about it,'' Mr. Pitman explained. "It was bringing families together and that is the kind of thing we are interested in.

"We earmarked $3,000 from the money we raised from the Byron Lee concert for the centre so this year's summer events can continue. It was going to stop because it did not have funding this year.'' Sandys Rotary also approached Carole Holding Ltd. and the Bank of Bermuda which donated $2,000 and $1,000 respectively.

"We were then able (on Saturday) to donate $6,000 to the centre which works out to be $1,000 per month for six months of this year.

"We hope Government will be continuing it. If not we will be looking to do something similar next year.'' Youth, Sport and Recreation Minister the Hon. Pamela Gordon said Government was looking to make the centre into a facility for the West End. This year the centre is open on Friday and Saturday nights.

"It was a pilot project,'' Ms Gordon explained. "It is something to try to appease the neighbourhood and assist the kids for somewhere to go.

"Ultimately we would love for it to be expanded but right now we do not have the funding to make it a full time project so we are relying on the Rotary and whoever wants to chip in to help so that this can continue.''
