Clearwater building move approved
Development Applications Board to move an industrial building near Clearwater Beach to another section of Southside.
The relocation involves the demolition and reconstruction of a 4,000-square-foot building which will be ready by September.
BLDC spokesman Don Grearson said the project is intended to accomplish two objectives; the first being to offer tenants quality industrial space in the dedicated industrial area, and secondly to enhance the Clearwater Beach area by removing an inappropriately placed industrial building.
"The building relocation offers a relatively quick and cost effective way to create good quality tenant space and to improve the look of the beach area,'' Mr. Grearson said.
He noted that the building is the first of two which is scheduled for removal from the Clearwater Beach area to the 62-acre industrial area which lies between Ships Wharf in St. George's and the Bermuda International Airport.
The approval of the relocations project also includes permission to construct a parking area alongside the building.
"This building will provide tenants with a complete package,'' Mr. Grearson said.
"We are also preparing to develop the interior of the building to suit other needs,'' he added.
In other DAB business, Leamington Caves and the Plantation restaurant received more bad news.
The DAB again rejected the application from owners of the Plantations restaurant for development.
The property, which had been put up for sale, is still in the hands of owner Carol West.
The restaurant, which was forced to close nearly two years ago due to operating at a loss, has made several applications to the Board since then.
The property, which already has four buildings and three cottages, submitted a request for a proposed restaurant, six-dwelling units, offices and parking.
But the DAB denied the request, citing that the proposed office use was contrary, and that the extent of development would have a detrimental impact on the cave.
The Board did however suggest that the owner develop a scheme which involves no expansion with only modest additions.
Mrs. West could not be reached for comment.
