Saltus.

Mrs. Saltus, who was also the first woman Dean of Academic Services, will be in charge of academic and student affairs on campus.

She said yesterday: "For a woman to be in this position is exciting and interesting and something I certainly look forward to doing.'' Board of governors chairman Lt. Col. Michael Darling said: "We have watched the progress of Mrs. Saltus with interest and I am particularly pleased that we now have a lady of high calibre and distinction at senior level at Bermuda College.'' Mrs. Saltus will be working with her department to ensure that students know everything about Bermuda College and know exactly what to do on entering and leaving the establishment.

She will be working with secondary schools for future students and universities in the UK, the US and Canada for current students who are looking to move on.

Mrs. Saltus said: "My experience over the last 15 years tells me that I have to consider our students before, during and after their time at the College.

"I have to ensure that students gain access to the College, ensure the quality and standards of our programmes, and ensure that graduates of the college transfer successfully either to senior college, university or to the world of work.

"I want us to build on our partnership with the secondary school system to maximise the potential of students, to provide the best learning environment through excellence in teaching and effective utilisation of our resources.'' Mrs. Saltus was born in Bermuda and educated at Berkeley Institute before taking her Bachelor of Science at St. Francis Xavier University.

After teaching for some time at the Berkeley Institute and Sandys Secondary, she continued her education at Althouse College of Education in Canada and at Reading University in England. Mrs. Saltus joined Bermuda College in 1977.
