The crash -- near the After Hours restaurant in Paget -- occurred just after 3 a.m. on Saturday morning, a Police spokesman said yesterday.

Police reported that three people were thrown from the westbound truck after it struck the wall and three others were trapped in or beneath the overturned wreckage as it lay by the car on the other side of the road.

Witnesses told The Royal Gazette that one man was trapped underneath the vehicle while two others were trapped inside.

All of the occupants of the van were males from Sandys. They ranged in age from 17 to 25.

Of the six, three were rushed to the intensive care unit of King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.

One of the victims, 21, suffered a broken collar bone and head injuries, a 17-year-old suffered a broken leg and chest injuries and a 23-year-old was injured in the chest and abdomen.

They have since been transferred from the intensive care unit to general wards.

The truck was described as a "total write-off.'' Mr. Dennis Carter, owner of nearby Pizza Dude, said he heard the crash just outside his restaurant.

"We were inside when we heard a truck flying up the hill ,'' he said. "Then we heard a big bang and the cops were right behind.'' An employee at the restaurant said one victim had a cut to his temple.

Three trapped in van wreckage From Page 1 said. "They could have done more for those people.'' Another witness had harsh words for the Police and paramedics. "The ambulance people were so cool it was disgusting. They weren't hurrying and a guy was underneath the van,'' he said.

The man said bystanders attempted to lift the van while the Police stood by.

"We tried to lift it because we knew the guy was in pain but we couldn't do it and had to put it down again. The guy was screaming in pain and the Police did nothing. I was almost going to laugh because I've never seen anything like it.'' Other witnesses said a tyre from the vehicle was found 75 yards around the corner.

An air pump was used to lift the van.
