Drunk driver ended in Birdcage

the Birdcage on Front Street after he rode his bike into it last December, Magistrates' Court heard last week.

Edward Petty, 28, was found unconscious in the Birdcage by the pursuing officer and was taken to hospital and treated for a broken wrist. He was later arrested.

Petty pleaded guilty to drink driving and heard how the motorcycle cop saw him "travelling at high speed'' past the junction of Front Street and Burnaby on December 3 -- moments before the collision.

A breath analyser test later revealed Petty, of Middle Road, Southampton, had an alcohol/blood level of 85 milligrams in 100 millilitres of blood.

The legal limit is 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood.

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner fined Petty $1,000 and disqualified him from driving all motor vehicles for 12 months.
