Road had been charged with two counts of assault causing bodily harm and as a result had been convicted of assaulting Sally Morris.

Court records in fact indicate Ms Williams had been charged with three counts of assault, two dating from November 30 1995, involving Michael Martin and Sally Morris, and one dating from May 30 1996, involving Michael Martin.

The Crown did not provide evidence for the assault on Sally Morris and Ms Williams was subsequently acquitted of that charge.

She was found guilty of assaulting Mr. Martin in both incidents.

Chinese migrants at US Cuba base Passengers and crew from the Chinese smuggling ship the Xing Da arrived at a US Naval Air base in Cuba yesterday.

The 83 passengers and 26 crew were flown out of Bermuda on Wednesday amid tight security.

They were flown to Guantanamo Bay, in Cuba, from where they will be taken to another destination, although exactly where has not been decided.

According to the US State Department the passengers and crew will be screened by the American Immigration Department to see if any have genuine claims to live in America.

The Xing Da was intercepted by US Coast Guards last week as part of an undercover sting operation that led to the arrests of three suspected smugglers in New York.

ANOTHER FIRE AT DERELICT BERMUDIANA FIR Another fire at derelict Bermudiana Firemen last night tackled another blaze at the derelict Bermudiana Hotel in Hamilton.

The fire was spotted around 6.30 p.m. and crews rushed to the scene.

But a spokesman for the Fire Service said the blaze was small and confined to one room. No-one was injured.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but it appears a discarded cigarette end set fire to bedding and clothes used by one of the vagrants who regularly sleep in the disused building.

Last Christmas Day, fire swept through the old ballroom at the hotel. The site, owned by Argus, is currently for sale.

DEEP-SEA FISHING BOAT PUT UP FOR SALE FHP Deep-sea fishing boat put up for sale The 137-foot deep-sea fishing vessel Granchio will go on the auctioneer's block today at noon at Penno's Wharf, in St. George's.

The steel-hulled vessel registered to Scorpio Trading of Halifax, Nova Scotia, was seized by order of the Supreme Court of Bermuda in November 1995 for default of payment. The plaintiff in the action is Oceanic Finance Ltd., of Hamilton.

Built in 1965 at the Halifax Ship Yards, the Granchio was converted to a deep-sea crabber and processor in 1994.

The Granchio arrived in St. George's in November after being badly mauled by hurricane weather while at sea. It put in for engine repairs and remained in port over the winter. It is powered by a 16-cylinder turbo-charged diesel engine capable of 1250 horsepower at 320rpm.

RUDE WELCOME FOR WOULD-BE RESIDENT CRM Rude welcome for would-be resident An American planning to move to Bermuda got a rude welcome to the Island.

Police spokeswoman Evelyn James-Barnett said the American woman, who planned to move to the Island with her Bermudian husband, was mugged by two youths on Wednesday evening.

The woman was returning to a Marsh Folly home around 10.45 p.m. when she noticed that she was being followed by two youths.

They ran past the woman, grabbed her shoulder bag -- containing her wallet, money and personal items -- and fled.

MAN STILL IN CRITICAL AFTER BIKE CRASH AC Man still in critical after bike crash Police are appealing to the public for any information about a single vehicle accident that took place Sunday evening on Harbour Road, Paget.

The victim, a 28-year-old Smith's Parish man, is listed in critical but stable condition in the intensive care unit at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital after his Ritmo cycle went out of control while negotiating a right-hand bend in the road.

He struck the near-side embankment and was thrown from the cycle, suffering head, neck and back injuries. Witnesses or anyone with information is asked to contact P.c. Fitz Walkes at 295-1001.

MOTORCYCLISTS CRASH, SENT TO HOSPITAL AC Motorcyclists crash, sent to hospital Two motorcycle riders wound up in hospital yesterday after their cycles collided.

Police spokeswoman Evelyn James-Barnett said the two motorcycles were travelling along Pitt's Bay Road when the accident occurred shortly after 4 p.m. on Wednesday.

One cycle was travelling south when the other bike, ridden by a visitor who was negotiating a turn while heading north, drifted into the path of the first cycle. The pair collided head-on.

Both were taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital where the visitor's gashed left eyelid and the other rider's fractured wrist were treated.

UMEMPLOYED MAN FINED TOTAL OF $850 CTS Unemployed man fined total of $850 An unemployed Southampton man had better find a job after being fined $850 in Magistrate's Court.

Terry A. Jones of Horseshoe Road appeared before Senior Magistrate Will Francis Wednesday on a list of traffic offences -- including speeding, driving without a drivers licence, and driving without protective headgear -- as well as facing a charge of failing to make child support payments.

Jones was fined $600 for the traffic violations and suspended from driving cars for 12 months.

In the matter of child support, court was told Jones had made no effort to pay support since his file had been opened. When asked if he had anything to say Jones responded: "What can I say.'' Mr. Francis replied: "Having heard this defendant I can only say he regards this court with contempt. I order you to pay $250 or face a prison term of 30 days.'' WOMAN PUT ON PROBATION FOR ASSAULT CTS Woman put on probation for assault A 31-year-old Pembroke woman was given two years probation and 180 hours of community service after being found guilty of assaulting the father of her two children and another woman.

Magistrate Cheryl-Ann Mapp also instructed Glenda V. Williams of North Shore Road to attend counselling sessions.

Williams intially denied the allegations she assaulted Michael Martin causing him bodily harm, and assaulted Sally Morris, causing her bodily harm. The incidents occured on November 30, 1995.

POLICE TO BE TRAINING AT HIGH SPEEDS POL Police to be training at high speeds Police yesterday warned road-users to watch for speeding patrol cars next week as the Service will be holding an advanced driving course for four officers.

Police spokesperson Evelyn James-Barnett said the drivers would be going through their paces on different roads throughout the Island.

TRAFFIC ADVISORY FOR DOCKYARD EVENT TFC Traffic advisory for Dockyard event Police have issued a traffic advisory for this weekend's Culture Fest in Dockyard.

Police spokesperson Evelyn James-Barnett said the road in front of the Clocktower Mall will be blocked off and controlled by Police between 10 a.m.

and 8 p.m. on Sunday.

And a one-way traffic system will be imposed during that time, with traffic entering Dockyard using Pender Road and Store Lane. Traffic leaving Dockyard will use the old Royal Naval Commercial Dock.

Mrs. James-Barnett said parking will be available on the Royal Naval Commercial Dock, but all traffic and car control will be supervised by Police.

NEW POLICE NIGHT SCHOOL STARTING UP POL New Police Night school starting up Anyone interested in the Police Night School Scheme are advised to register as soon as possible.

The course is free and open to anyone considering a career in uniform or just interested in how the Police Service works. Completing the course earns students a certificate of completion. Lectures are Tuesday nights, 7 to 9.30, starting October 15, for one month.

Registration forms are available at headquarters and all Police stations.
