Burgess was gutted by fire yesterday, causing an estimated $20,000 in damage.

Five fire trucks with 16 firefighters rushed to the Aerial View Lane home, just off Vesey Street in Devonshire, shortly before 3.30 a.m.

They found a bedroom on the southern side of the house engulfed in flames.

Ms Burgess' daughter had been asleep in the room, but awoke when she smelled smoke. She was not injured.

It took firefighters close to an hour to extinguish the blaze, believed to have been caused by an electrical fault.

Ms Burgess could not be reached for comment yesterday.

DATE SET FOR ANNUAL BOAT SHOW BTG Date set for annual boat show Bermuda's annual boat show will be held on Saturday, May 8 and Sunday, May 9 at Dockyard, organisers announced this week.

The show, run by the Dockyard Marina and WEDCO, will be open to the public between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. each day.

"As on previous occasions, boats both new and second-hand will be displayed on land and in the water,'' said Mr. Mark Osinga, marina manager.

"Marine supplies and engines will be exhibited in the various commercial display areas, and the public will also be able to tour booths promoting such products as sails, upholstery and safety gear.'' Dockyard's restaurants, shops and attractions would also be open for the weekend, he said. And buses and ferries would be running.

Mr. Osinga said potential exhibitors should contact the marina for details.

MAIL THEFT PROBE CRM Mail theft probe Police are investigating a report of mail theft after a man was seen acting suspiciously near a home on Vesey Street, Devonshire on Wednesday afternoon, Police spokesman Sgt. John Dale said yesterday.

The mail, which was taken from the female resident's letter box, included cheques to the Accountant General.

Sgt. Dale said Police were advising businesses not to accept third-party cheques. But if they did, he said, they should be cautious.

A Winget diesel cement mixer engine was also stolen on Wednesday.

The engine, which is an air-cooled, single-cylinder type, was taken off a mixer at Works and Engineering's Bailey's Bay quarry.

REFUSED TEST CTS Refused test Refusal to take a Police breathalyser test proved costly for a Hamilton Parish man.

Paul Gregory Lindo, 36, said to traffic officers: "Why should I take a test?'' He was being interviewed after an accident on Flatts Hill on March 7 in which his Subaru car was involved.

Prosecutor Sgt. Kenrick James told Magistrates' Court that Lindo was found to be unsteady on his feet, had glazed eyes and a flushed face. Officers could also smell liquor on his breath.

Lindo remained silent in court and was fined $350 and disqualified for 12 months.

LICENCES RENEWED LIQ Licences renewed The Liquor Licensing Authority approved three more liquor licence renewals yesterday after no objections were heard.

A licence renewal for Casey's Cocktail Lounge on Queen Street in Hamilton was approved.

And the licence for Woody's Cafe on Harrington Sound Road was also approved, subject to receipt of a sanitary certificate from the Health Department.

Similar approval was given to the licence for the Royal Air Force Association and Club on Cedar Avenue.

DOG FOILS PROWLER CRM Dog foils prowler A prowler was stopped in his tracks from entering a home in Warwick, Police reported yesterday.

The man tried to open the bathroom window of a home in Jones Lane, Warwick, around 3 a.m. on Wednesday, but was chased off by the occupants' dog.
