The 43-year-old victim was waiting at the Washington Street bus depot when five teenagers approached him and demanded cash.

When he said that he did not have any one of the gang turned violent and began punching him in the face. The man was brought to the ground where he was then repeatedly kicked in the body.

He was eventually able to escape and ran up Church Street and into Queen Street.

But he was confronted by the mob for a second time when he turned into Reid Street. Fortunately a relative accompanied by a friend were able to step in and stop the gang from attacking again.

The victim was able to make his way to Hamilton Police Station to report the incident. He described his attacker as dark-skinned with a stocky build. He was wearing a green baggy pullover sweat top and blue baggy jeans.

Police are also investigating a number of recent break-ins and thefts.

On Thursday night a quantity of cash and four bags of popcorn were stolen after thieves broke into Reese's Kitchen on Border Lane North, Pembroke.

Carrots and a quantity of other vegetables were stolen from a garden on Tribe Road Six on the same evening and Police recovered a number of PVC shutters take from a construction site on Richmond Road, Pembroke.

Opportunist thieves stole a bag which had been left in an unlocked car parked on Cottage Hill, Hamilton, on Thursday night.

On Friday night a collection of video tapes, CDs and a pair of Adidas shoes were stolen from a house on Ocean Sands Drive, Warwick, And a daring burglar got away with a large stash of cash after entering a home on Harbour Road, Warwick on Saturday night.

The woman occupant was in another part of the house at the time of the break-in, which happened between about 9.00p.m. and 10.00p.m.

And vandals damaged the front glass door of the Emporium Building on Front Street in the early hours of yesterday morning. The cost of the damage is not yet known.

An American Airlines jet from Puerto Rico had to make an emergency diversion to Bermuda on Friday afternoon after a passenger began having seizures.

The woman, from Hartford, Connecticut, was taken from the plane and rushed to King Edward Memorial Hospital's intensive care unit.

Her condition stabilised and she was later transferred to a general ward.

Last night a hospital spokeswoman described her condition as very satisfactory.
