stealing a gold ring from Kirk's Jewellery and Design.

Rachael Tamera Bean of Bob's Valley Road, Sandys, went to the jewellery store on November 6 and asked to see a ring from a display case.

She requested to see an item from another display case and put the ring on her finger, and later left the store without paying for it.

The store owner notified Police who later arrested Bean and recovered the ring from her boyfriend whom she had given it to.

Lawyer Larry Scott, representing Bean, asked for a Social Inquiry Report, but Magistrate Edward King said he was not inclined to order one, and instead asked for mitigation.

He said it was the young girl's first offence and she was very sorry for the embarrassment it had caused herself and her parents, who were present in court.

He said Bean came from a good Christian family but she made a silly mistake and had assured Mr. Scott it would never happen again.

In sentencing, Mr. King took into consideration her guilty plea and clean record and the fact that the ring was returned to its rightful owner. He said he did not consider a social inquiry report or a custodial sentence warranted.

He then conditionally discharged her for 12 months.

DEVONSHIRE MAN FINED FOR COCAINE POSSESSION CTS Devonshire man fined for cocaine possession A man was fined in Magistrates' court last week after pleading guilty to possession of cocaine.

Dean Anthony Smith, 37, of Middle Terrace, Devonshire, was stopped by Police on Friswells Road in Pembroke on August 26.

Officers questioned him and he became aggressive, and they noticed he had his hands firmly shut.

He was arrested and taken to Hamilton Police Station, and before entering the building, officers noticed that he dropped a white rock-like substance on the ground.

The rock was identified as 88 percent pure cocaine weighing .25 grams.

Smith asked for leniency and said he had children to support and health problems.

He was fined $200 by Magistrate Edward King.

DRUNK DRIVER HAD TROUBLE PARKING HIS BIKE CTS Drunk driver had trouble parking his bike A Southampton man was fined and disqualified from driving after pleading guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol.

James Allen Landy, 50, of Sunny Side Park Drive, was stopped by Police on November 10 in Warwick at 9.20 p.m.

Officers noticed Landy had trouble parking his bike and was unsteady on his feet when he was asked to get off the cycle.

Police asked him if he had been drinking, and he said: "I've had a beer.'' He was arrested and taken to Hamilton Police Station where the lowest blood alcohol reading was 154 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood.

Lundy was fined $750 and disqualified from driving all vehicles for one year.

Lundy also pleaded guilty to not having a vehicle licence and not having insurance, for which he was fined $250 and $1,000.

He was also charged with not having a valid driver's licence, but he pleaded not guilty. He was told by Magistrate Edward King to produce it at 2.30 p.m.

and was released on $150 bail.

MAGISTRATE JAILS MAN FOR NOT PAYING FINES CTS Magistrate jails man for not paying fines A 25-year-old man was sent to prison after being brought before Magistrates' Court for not paying several fines from 1999.

Leon Fough, of Coral hill Road in Warwick, was ordered to pay a $6000 fine or spend 120 days in prison and pay a $310 fine or spend 42 days in prison.

Fough said he had a pin in his leg that had been acting up lately owing to the weather and that he could not raise the money to pay the fines.

Magistrate Edward King had no time for his excuses. Fough was led away to begin serving his prison terms which are to run concurrently.
