Grape Bay residents want wider entrance
to widen the private estate road's entrance.
Grape Bay Property Owners Association member Mr. Eric Benevides said the group has applied for planning permission to move the two pillars at the entrance much farther apart.
They also want to cut into the embankment on each side of the entrance to the 10-foot drive to widen it a further 10 feet.
Mr. Benevides said it was impossible for a car to enter the drive from Middle Road at the same time a car is exiting it.
During rush-hour periods, negotiating the turn can be especially hazardous as it requires a car turning into the drive to back up to let a car out.
He said the drive was especially chaotic when residents, such as Premier the Hon. Sir John Swan and the American Consul General, hold functions.
He said the two pillars had marked the drive for some 70 years, but more people now live on it. There are 16 houses and three tourist cottages on the road, he said.
He said the association decided to take action after noticing the pillars were being chipped away by vehicles accidentally knocking into them.
"Trash trucks, trucks and many residents have had close calls,'' Mr.
Benevides said. "Even I have had a few close calls. It a dangerous spot and we want to make sure no one gets killed there.''
