dangerous chase across the Causeway, were charged in Magistrates' Court yesterday.

Wilfred H. DeGraff, 22, of Channel View Lane, pleaded guilty to using offensive words and escaping from lawful custody.

But he denied assaulting a Police constable and wilfully obstructing an officer.

Kaiya C. Darrell, 16, of Rocky Lane, pleaded guilty to escaping from lawful custody, failing to stop at the request of an officer, and driving dangerously.

He pleaded not guilty to assaulting a Police constable.

Senior Magistrate Will Francis agreed to hear the charges against Darrell of failing to stop and dangerous driving, and set the other charges for a trial date.

Police prosecutor Sgt. Phil Taylor said an officer at the airport called requiring assistance on August 11 around 12.55 p.m. after Darrell and DeGraff -- who were in custody for undisclosed reason -- escaped on a motorcycle driven by Darrell.

Sgt. Taylor said Police chased the men as they rode on the Causeway in St.

George's.

Darrell refused to stop when signalled by Police, and officers unsuccessfully tried to overtake the bike on the Causeway and Blue Hole Hill. Sgt. Taylor said the bike was swerving back and forth and in and out of traffic, and posed a threat to vehicles in the other lane.

The two men escaped through Highland Road, but were later arrested on August 13.

Mr. Francis fined Darrell $500 for dangerous driving, $150 for failing to stop, and ordered him disqualified from all motor vehicles for 12 months.

But when Mr. Francis found out Darrell was a student, he reduced the fines to $400 and $100 respectively. Darrell and DeGraff were released on bail of $1,000 each with a like surety until their trial on November 28.
