The 64-year-old attorney, who has a serious heart condition, will learn his fate on February 10 -- after the trial judge considers medical evidence.

By an 11-to-one majority, the jury found Madeiros guilty of cheating alcoholic landowner Boyd Davis out of $506,000 while managing his finances.

Prosecutor Ms Sharon Kenny told the court she would be asking for a prison sentence next month.

She said Madeiros should be jailed in the meantime for his own protection -- in case he repeated an alleged suicide attempt made in March last year.

Outside Supreme Court Three, Davis was congratulated by supporters including his ex-wife Rosalie, who alerted Police to Madeiros.

"Justice has been done,'' said Davis, who said during the trial he had been "dry'' for 15 weeks.

He said he would not be celebrating, and would spend the day quietly. "It's been a long, drawn-out trial,'' he said. "It's not going to be an easy road for me.

"I would like to congratulate all those that have stuck by me and said to me: `Boyd, we'll help you'.

"Without their help I don't know how I would have made it.'' Davis, also 64, confirmed "without a doubt'' that he would be suing Madeiros for a return of his cash.

But the court heard Madeiros spent the loot on gambling and trips abroad, including a jet-setting European tour with his girlfriend.

He now has no property and nothing to show for his 37 years of practice on the Island.

Puisne Judge the Hon Mr. Justice Ground denied Madeiros bail, despite a plea from defence lawyer Mr. Richard Hector for him to be allowed to sort out what was left of his business.

Madeiros had returned from an overseas trip to face trial, Mr. Hector told the court. The only thing served by placing him in custody until February 10 would be the revenge some people wanted, he said.

During the nine-day hearing, jurors heard evidence from 12 witnesses and were presented with more than 300 documents.

Yesterday Mr. Justice Ground reminded them of the central issue in the case -- Madeiros' claim that the $506,000 was a gift from Davis in return for his work on Sleepy Hollow estate, Hamilton Parish, which Davis inherited in 1984. They spent just 90 minutes considering their verdict.

Mr. Hector said he would be discussing with Madeiros whether to appeal the decision. His client was feeling "as well as can be expected''.

Madeiros took the money from an account held by Davis after he gave him power of attorney in 1986. It was disguised as legal fees and siphoned off in increasing amounts between April, 1987 and November, 1989. He was arrested in August, 1991. He recently suffered a stroke and a heart attack, and was fitted with a pacemaker last October.

Davis, who earned more than $2.6 million from the estate, now owns a garage, an orchard and a banana patch. He is a tenant on the estate which was owned by his family for 150 years.
