Amendments to labour laws regarding union recognition by employers should be tabled in the House of Assembly during its next session, which gets underway in November, according to Labour Minister Quinton Edness.

Mr. Edness said proposed changes to labour legislation, the status of middle management unions and the recommendations coming out of a jobs conference in the spring, are amongst the things his Ministry has been tackling this summer.

"Proposals for amending the legislation are currently being looked at by the Labour Advisory Council, and we should have something to table in the House in the next session,'' Mr. Edness said.

"Middle management union issues are also being discussed by the Council.'' Meanwhile, a report on a Labour Ministry sponsored jobs conference which was held in April, has been examined by Mr. Edness, and is currently being reviewed by Ministry staff.

The report, written by Arnold Minors, contains recommendations for boosting employment opportunities for Bermudians.

"The report is being processed internally, and I cannot say at this point what the effects of the report will be.

"Discussions concerning jobs are obviously part of the ongoing process of work at the Ministry,'' Mr. Edness said.
