Let's all make our roads safer

Did someone say "Road Safety Week''? What does it have to do with me? Nothing wrong with my driving. It's those other idiots on the road who should pay attention. Why don't they learn how to drive? Double parking. Not indicating.

Cutting me off. Driving too fast. Driving too slow. No manners any more. Why don't they all just stay off the roads! Let's just stop and think for a second. Who are they anyway? Got news for you.

They are us. Yep. A whole bunch of us make up them, and them folks are not doing too well on the roads these days and I don't think that's news to anyone. It's certainly not news to those of us who have an interest in road safety, and it's old news to those of us who get to pick up the pieces when things go wrong.

So what should Road Safety Week mean to you? I guess what I'd like you to do is to pause for just a second and think about what you can do to improve the road situation in this country rather than what they should do. How can you make our roads safer? How can you help our young people become safer drivers? How can you help decrease the carnage on our roads? We need your help. Our children need your help. Pitch in and make our roads safer. And remember, they are us.

Road crash: We are all responsible for the poor state of driving on the roads, says Road Safety Council chairman Dr. Joseph Froncioni
