Hunt's Sanitation and Excavating Services were awarded the contract by the Ministry of Works and Engineering.

A spokesperson for the ministry said this week: "The general responsibility of the contractor will be to inspect all of the incoming waste loads and to ensure that all acceptable materials are compacted.'' Waste materials that will be accepted at the site include: plastics, electronic equipment such as VCR's, televisions and stereos, household appliances including stoves, refrigerators and air conditioners.

Tyres and other rubber products will also be accepted, along with scrap aluminium, large tree stumps, PVC piping, large demolition waste (including rocks in excess of 12 x 12 x 18 inches), clean fuel storage tanks and reinforced concrete blocks.

Other materials like household and horticultural waste, sludge and liquid and chemical waste will not be taken.

"The Ministry of Works and Engineering is continuing to develop very strict guidelines for the future disposal of waste at all of the Island's dump sites,'' the spokesperson added.

"In accordance with the Development Applications Board ruling, the Ministry will not be accepting any potentially hazardous materials at the Tynes Bay Waste Treatment Facility once it is in full-time operation.

"Steps are being undertaken to ensure that the public is aware of what will and will not be accepted at Tynes Bay.'' The spokesperson noted that such steps formed an integral part of Government's overall waste management scheme which was introduced in November of last year.

"They represent the Ministry's commitment to ensure that the incinerator once on line will operate safely and efficiently. The public is encouraged to continue to adhere to these waste disposal guidelines.'' Hours of operation for the Airport site are from 7.30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays and from 8.30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays. The dump will not be open on Sundays.
