Opposition MP rejects amusement park plan
image and may even drive away tourists, Shadow Tourism Minister Mr. David Allen said yesterday.
Such a facility, which could cost as much as $75 million, is the idea of engineering contractor and political activist Mr. Ray Whitecross who believes it would lure an extra 100,000 visitors each year to Bermuda.
Mr. Whitecross said last week he had plans to build the water-oriented theme park at Daniels Head on land currently occupied by the Canadian forces, who will be pulling out over the next two years.
He said it would be a "mini-version'' of Florida's Wet`n Wild fun park featuring water slides, a roller coaster, swimming pools with wave makers, restaurants and a mini-train taking people to and from points in Sandys Parish.
"It may help keep our hotels open year round,'' Mr. Whitecross said. He added it would give him and investors in the project the chance to "give something back to the community'' by creating jobs and entertainment for locals.
But Mr. Allen said yesterday: "It would make the Island into one more stop on the Florida turnpike.
"I am not convinced such an attraction would be suitable for Bermuda. It may even discourage visitors. The Island is best-served by offering attractions that fit into its image of being a unique and distinct destination -- attractions which draw on our culture and environment.'' Mr. Allen said he also doubted whether the amusement park would be a financial success.
"I have to wonder whether with our year round turnover of visitors it would be financially viable,'' he said. "If it is not successful we may end up with a great big white elephant and potential eyesore. With a 21-mile Island it just may not be economically or environmentally viable.'' Tourism Minister the Hon. C.V. (Jim) Woolridge said yesterday he was unable to comment on the idea because he had "not heard a thing about it.'' Environment Minister the Hon. Ann Cartwright DeCouto said she had also missed reports in the media on the proposed fun park. However, she did say "the idea does seem rather grandiose.'' Mr. Allen suggested a better idea might be an underwater marine park. "In my view existing water sports such as scuba diving and exploring the Island's wrecks and reefs have not nearly been capitalised on. We have a natural marine park surrounding us.'' Mr. Whitecross said he has written to Premier the Hon. Sir John Swan telling him about his plans and is awaiting a response.
