Four Staffordshire terriers were approved for importation to Bermuda by government veterinarian Jonathan Nisbett.

Pitbulls have sparked public debate in recent months.

However, in regard to the Staffordshire terriers, Dr. Nisbett said: "There was no cause not to approve them. They met all the requirements based on health, vaccinations and flea and tick treatments. We had little grounds to deny them.

"We went beyond what we usually do and met with the person prior to importation.

"Without breed specific legislation, denying the dog's entry is unfair.

However, the Minister does have the right to question the cause of an importation. We have kept a close eye on the person. There has been no evidence of maltreatment or fighting.''
