The officers were driving close to Devil's Hole in Smith's when the home-made firebomb hit their car.

Luckily both officers escaped injury and the car was not badly damaged in the worst incident of the night.

Community relations officer Sgt. John Dale said: "It was lucky they were not hurt or the car was badly damaged. All it needed was to hit the fuel tank and it could have proved fatal.

"We are seeking any information about this incident and anyone who knows anything will be treated in confidence.'' Vandals also used Hallowe'en as an excuse to smash windows at Warwick Secondary School and to set fire to a couple of motorbikes on the Island.

Other Hallowe'en hooligans caused a nuisance by throwing stones, bottles and eggs in various incidents.

Sgt. Dale said: "Although we would have preferred not to have any incidents we were satisfied, from a general point of view, that most people went out and had a good time.'' He said only a few people seemed intent on spoiling the fun for everyone else.
