A team of narcotics officers backed up by Police support unit officers swooped at around 10 p.m. on Friday and searched the premises.

A Police media spokesman said: "There were seizures of white rock like substances -- a small amount. And plant material -- a small amount.

"There were two arrests. There are no charges as yet.'' Weekend media reports said more than 20 officers were involved in the swoop, narcotics had been found at various locations and that one man had stashed drugs in his underpants.

However the Police spokesman was unable to say whether the drugs were found inside or outside the club or what had sparked the raid.

But he said several men had also been arrested on outstanding warrants.

PHC President Chris Furbert refused to comment about the Police action.

When contacted by The Royal Gazette he put the phone down without speaking.

When he was called again he said: "Why do you keep calling this house? I have no comment to make whatsoever.'' Earlier this year Mr. Furbert said if he caught anyone selling drugs he would report them.

And he told The Royal Gazette in February: "We will not tolerate drugs on our property.'' Warwick resident and former area MP Quinton Edness defended PHC and said it was time drug dealers got life sentences.

He said: "I am quite sure the club's administration wanted to do everything they could to prevent all this from happening.

"I know they tried very hard to prevent drugs from proliferating around the club's premises.

"It's a very difficult situation because the selling and use of drugs around sports facilities has become a fact of life in Bermuda.

"It's terrifying.

"In defence of PHC the club is tremendously concerned about drugs in sports.

There have been a number of discussions in their club about it.

PHC raided "It's a tremendous community club and I am sorry to see it tarnished by people hanging around selling drugs.

"We will probably have to come out with some extreme measures to protect the sport.

"This community has to really get tough on people who sell drugs. It's disgusting. I think we should put them away for life.'' Mr. Edness said it was very difficult to stop people selling drugs outside the club's premises.

The raid on PHC came the day after Police Commissioner Jonathan Smith said extra resources would be put into fighting drugs.

Police and customs have seized more than $12 million worth of drugs this year and recent soaring crime rates have been blamed on a massive influx of heroin hitting Bermuda.
