The date -- September 8 -- has been designated as literacy day by the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).

Ms. Smith said: "It's essential we ensure Bermudians, especially young Bermudians, can read and write well so they can continue to learn and take part in the knowledge-based economy.'' As part of the literacy launch posters featuring artwork donated by artists will be placed in The Royal Gazette on a monthly basis for a year to emphasise the national importance of literacy.

The Premier said: "If Bermuda is to continue to be successful in the third millennium we must ensure our citizens are well educated in all areas of literacy.

"Studies have shown clear links between low literacy skills and crime, health and safety.

"On the other hand, people with strong literacy skills are able to participate in -- and contribute to -- the economic, political, social and cultural life of their community.''
