A groundbreaking ceremony will be held this week to mark the beginning of the Custom's House Square restoration project in St. George's.

The endeavour is part of a scheme called "St. George's Town Heritage, Bringing History to Life'' which will propel the town into the 21st century.

The Custom's House Square project will involve replacing the asphalt roadway and concrete sidewalks with specially-made paving stones, new decorative lights and tree planters.

The paving stones are made of high-strength concrete and can withstand heavy vehicle loads.

"The paving stones are specifically made for placement in historic town settings,'' said Larry Jacobs, the secretary to the Corporation of St.

George's. "It is important that our street restoration projects enhance and complement the unique and historic buildings located adjacent to them.'' The work will be funded by Works and Engineering and the Bank of Bermuda Centennial Trust.

The Custom's House Square project is the third East End heritage endeavour to be developed.

In September, work commenced on the Town Gateway and Town Centre Gateways which will be completed this month.

And the Barber's Alley restoration project was completed in December.
