Soars avoids UBP primary
election in Paget West, according to the party's branch chairman Mr. Graham Smith.
The decision by Mr. Soares' running mate, House Speaker the Hon. David Wilkinson, to retire at the next election created a vacancy. And so far, Mr.
Smith said, each of the three primary candidates has elected to leave Mr.
Soares out of the fray.
The primary is scheduled for August 17. The candidates who have joined the race so far are Mr. Tim Smith, Mr. Terry West and Mr. Mark Selley. The deadline for additional challenges is August 3.
PUBLIC INVITED TO ROADS MEETING GVT Public invited to roads meeting A public meeting is scheduled for tonight on the current state of Bermuda's roads and plans for their future development.
The Department of Works and Engineering presentation will take place at No. 1 Shed on Front Street, beginning at 7:30 p.m..
It will deal with the maintenance and development of the Island's roads, as well as street cleaning, hedge trimming, street lighting and other issues.
"We are hoping to have a question and answer period after the presentation,'' a Department of Works and Engineering spokesman said.
Works Minister the Hon. Clarence Terceira and department technical officers will be in attendance.
TALENT TRIO HEAD FOR THE HAGUE CPN Talent trio head for the hague Three talented youngsters are off to The Hague in Holland next month, where they will compete against children from around the world for the Danny Kaye International Children's Award.
The award is part of a UNICEF fund-raising programme which offers a $10,000 scholarship to the talent competition winner, who must be 16 or under.
The three local entrants are singer Kalilah Smith, 16, instrumentalist Mark Lomas, 15, and dancer Zalika Millett, 16. They were chosen from a local talent competition in April, which attracted 33 participants.
"The gala will take place on August 14 and will be hosted by actors Audrey Hepburn and Roger Moore,'' said Ms Constance Benjamin, chairperson of Bermuda Child Fest, which organised the local competition.
"The Bermuda talents will be competing with children from 40 other countries.
This will be a great exposure for them.'' GIRLS WANTED YTH Girls wanted A five-day Outward Bound course for girls has an unusual feature this summer: room for more participants.
The adventure training course runs from July 20 to July 25, and is open to girls aged 14 and 15, at a cost of $85. It includes such activities as climbing, absailing, sailing and kayaking.

CYCLISTS APPEAL POL Cyclists appeal Police are asking for help from the rider of a motorcycle who collided with a four-year-old boy last Wednesday afternoon.
A Police spokesman said that around 2.30 p.m., the boy ran into the path of the cyclist on Smith's Avenue in Warwick.
The boy was taken to hospital by his parents, where he received stitches for a cut to his forehead. He was later discharged.
The cyclist is asked to contact P.c. Edward Lightbourne at the Hamilton Police Station.
BREAK-INS CRM Break-ins Police reported two daytime house break-ins which occurred last Wednesday.
The first occurred on Tribe Road No. 3 in Warwick, where a woman returned from work and found $88 in cash and several pieces of jewellery missing.
The same day, a housekeeper who arrived for work at a house on Bellevue Drive, Paget noticed the house had been burgled. Police said it was not known if anything had been taken.
