at the Bank of Bermuda on Wednesday night.

The five were treated for exposure to Halon fumes after the incident at the bank's Par-la-Ville branch.

A Bank spokesman denied reports that there was any kind of explosion or the computer system was damaged.

Senior vice president Mr. Luis Douglas said routine maintenance of two air-conditioning units was being carried out. The units were re-started and an accumulation of dust close to a heating coil caused smoke to enter into the ducts under the floor.

"The resultant smoke activated the facility's smoke detectors which subsequently activated the fire control system. Halon, a highly effective, non-toxic and non-corrosive fire-fighting fume was immediately dispensed.

"Halon, which is stored under pressure, is dispensed quickly and downward.

The activation caused some of the ceiling tiles near the dispenser tiles to loosen and fall. Staff members exposed to the debris and Halon were immediately taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital as a precautionary measure.

"Five bank employees were admitted. The employees were given oxygen and medical attention and all were released. Medical staff confirmed that all employees were unaffected by the fumes.'' Mr. Douglas said that systems staff and engineers deactivated computers as a precaution. Checks revealed no damage or malfunction.

"The principal customer inconvenience which has resulted from the incident is a delay in our retail banking computer services. The incident, while unfortunate, demonstrated the effectiveness of our emergency system, equipment and procedures.

"Further... the incident showed how expertly, quickly and professionally the Bank of Bermuda's employees reacted in dealing with a crisis situation.

"We have encouraged staff members that were exposed, to seek medical attention. The Bank will compensate all medical fees.''
