Stompy, created by artist Calvin McNorton, is expected to help promote the local Crime Stoppers Programme.

Committee member James Landy yesterday told the The Royal Gazette that the mascot grew out of natural human characteristics.

"He has large ears, to hear everything that's going on around him,'' Mr.

Landy explained. "And has big eyes, to see what's going on around him; a big mouth, to speak what he hears, and large feet to stomp out crime.'' According to special events organiser Ralph Richardson, Stompy will be on everything from T-shirts to posters.

"A Stompy costume will be created and there are plans to possibly animate him,'' Mr. Richardson said. "We want to make him an important part of Bermuda.'' He added that Stompy will play a major role in Crime Stopper's week, October 28 through November 3, in addition to their raffle.

"The raffle starts Monday and goes to November 28,'' explained Crime Stoppers member Danny Bucher. "There will be about 20 prizes, including a Honda Scoopy, two round-trip tickets to Boston or Raleigh-Durham and a weekend for two at one of four major local hotels.'' Mr. Bucher said the $5 tickets can be purchased from any Crime Stoppers member, various Police officers, the Aquarium, or Kit'n Caboodle in the Bermudiana Arcade on Queen Street. Crime Stoppers, which has given out some $9,000 in rewards, is hoping to raise $20,000 with the raffle.
