A 14-year-old student described how she was attacked by a group of youths in her high school.

Two teenagers, both 16 and from the same high school, have been charged in Magistrates' Court with common assault against the girl.

A separate charge of sexual assault was dropped.

The girl was the first witness to take the stand as the trial got underway.

She testified that she was in the art room during the school's lunch hour socialising with her friends.

She said two of them left to get lunch while the others waited in the art room behind a locked door.

When the two girls returned with lunch, the complainant said, a first-year male student was standing immediately outside the door. And as it was opened a pack of older boys rushed at the door pushing the younger boy into the art room before the girls could shut the door.

Once inside, the girl recalled, the younger student opened the door of the art room for the older boys -- including the two defendants -- who entered the room and talked with the girls. Eventually, she said, the boys left except for one of the defendants who began "skylarking'' or play-fighting with two other girls.

As the two girls wrestled him to the door and opened it, the complainant claimed that a group of 15 to 20 boys rushed into the room.

She said the boys grabbed one of the girls and laid her on the counter. The complainant said at that point she tried to leave the room.

"One of them gripped my bag and another gripped my arm,'' she told the court.

"Then they picked me up and put me on top of the counter and one of them had my legs. One of them held me in my chest and the other was poking me in my vagina area.'' She said after about five to 10 minutes one of the defendants told them to stop.

The complainant said she got up and tried to leave the room, but one of the youths gripped her by her bag. However, she said she managed to escape by flinging the bag off her shoulders.

After visiting the principal's office, the complainant said she talked to the school counsellor and was driven home.

Lawyer for one of the defendants Ms Patricia Harvey was scheduled to begin cross-examination when the trial resumes on Wednesday before Senior Magistrate the Wor. Will Francis.
