Tournament by winning the hotly contested top flight in the two session Swiss

Joe Wakefield and Bill Tucker combined with visitors Ellasue Chaitt and Mark Stein to win the Knock Outs. Vera Petty and Roman Smolski, the runners-up in that event, then won the Swiss Teams with Michael Cornes, formerly of Bermuda and Henry Bethe, of Ithaca, New York.

The latters' win clinched the battle for best achievement by a local player, Petty and Smolski happily sharing the honour of claiming the Norman Bach Trophy.

The Bermuda Trophy, for best achievement by a local player starting with fewer than 20 points, was won by Wendy Gray. The Maude Lines Trophy for best visitor went to Henry Beth.

An all-Bermuda team clinched Flight B of the Swiss Teams event -- the third victory in four years for Joe Taussig, Charles Hall, and Eddie and Stephanie Kyme. The Flight C Teams was won by a team from Toronto.

Earlier, the Bermuda team of Barbara Huntingdon, Nea Willits, Theresa Howard and Betty White won Flight Three of the week-long Knock Out Team event and Bruce Fenton and Desmond Nash performed well in Flight D of the Stratiflighted Pairs.

In all, 799 players -- 100 from Bermuda -- took part in the competition which was staged at the Southampton Princess.
