Esso is hoping to build the station on a strip of land across from Bermuda International Airport and opposite the Bermuda Biological Station on the approach to the Swing Bridge.

The conservationists say the land has been zoned for recreational use and is situated across the road from a National Park.

The Trust points out that the National Park is well used by Bermudians for picnicking and acts as a natural break between Hamilton Parish and the town of St. George's newly designated as a World Heritage site.

A gas station on the site would increase traffic and congestion, the Trust claims.

And the Trust said there could a danger to pedestrians using the park who might cross the busy road to use a convenience store at the garage.

It says the land is zoned for recreational use under the St. David's Special Development Zone.

In a letter to the Planning Department, BNT Environmental Committee Chair Edith Martin writes: "Given the small portion of the land in the St. David's Special Development Zone which is set aside as open space and the large amount of other developable land available, the Trust respectfully submits that it would not be appropriate to build a large commercial structure like the one proposed on this spot.

"There is a significant area of land zoned industrial to the east of the Swing Bridge roundabout available.''
