Bermuda in the coming months to learn new tactics on combating drug trafficking via cruise ships.

Jack Sullivan, Executive Director of Crime Stoppers in Miami, said he was so impressed with the way Bermuda had targeted cruise ships, he wanted to see how the same programme could be implemented in his city.

He has been working closely with local Crime Stoppers coordinator Alex McDonald, but now planning to come to the Island to actually see for himself how Customs, Crime Stoppers and the cruise ships work together.

The Royal Gazette revealed on Tuesday how Miami was following Bermuda's lead in tackling the problem of narcotics importation via cruise liners by going on board the ships to educate and warn crew about the dangers of acting as drug mules.

Last night, Mr. Sullivan said: "We are very impressed with what Bermuda has done, but what we're particularly impressed with is the partnership that has developed between both Customs and Crime Stoppers.

"We have not yet finished the logistics, but I think we will be coming out to look at your programmes within the next three months.

"We would then hope to have a similar programme in place by the time our cruise season begins in October.

"Drugs coming in on cruise ships is a big problem to us just as much as it is anywhere else.

"We want to come over and look at the programmes and see how we can adjust what is being done in Bermuda to what we are doing in Miami.''
