A suspected sex attacker pounced on his victim and did not tell her he was infected with HIV, a court heard.

Magistrates were told yesterday that the 37-year-old from Pembroke, who cannot be named for legal reasons, "knowingly had sex with a person'' without telling her of his disease.

The accused man, who stood in the dock wearing grey jeans and a T-shirt, was charged with a serious sexual assault, having been infected with the HIV virus.

Senior Magistrate Will Francis ordered him to be remanded in custody.

And Crown counsel Charmaine Smith said the offence could carry a 30-year prison sentence.

The case will come before Magistrates Court again on October 12, but can only be tried in Supreme Court.

The 25-year-old from Pembroke, who cannot be named for legal reasons, yesterday denied stalking a woman last Wednesday and Thursday.

He also pleaded not guilty to sexually assaulting her on Thursday.

But Senior Magistrate Will Francis granted $2,500 bail, with strict conditions, after hearing arguments from defence lawyer Mark Pettingill and Crown Counsel Charmaine Smith.

The defendant was ordered not to contact the victim or approach her home or place of work.

Mrs. Smith, who objected to bail, said she planned to call eight witnesses.

The trial is scheduled for January 26, 27 and 28.
