Unable to work until he gets status, the man told Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner that he would be unable to pay the fines.

Orane Alonzo Rawlins, 22, of Swansbay Hill in Pembroke was convicted of drunk driving during and remanded in custody until his fines had been paid.

Rawlins admitted driving under the influence of alcohol on North Shore Road in Hamilton parish on January 1.

Crown Counsel Wayne Caines told the court that Rawlins was arrested after Police were called to North Shore Road by Dub City Variety after an accident was reported. He took a breath test, with a lowest reading of 161 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood.

Rawlins had nothing to say before Mr. Warner fined him $1,000 and disqualified him from driving all vehicles for one year.

Rawlins also pleaded guilty to failing to stop after an accident, not having a drivers licence, and driving without due care and attention, for which he was fined $350, $100 and $350 respectively.

Mr. Warner also asked Rawlins about $2,950 in unpaid fines from July of 1999 for giving false statements to Police, driving an uninsured, unlicensed car, and not having a drivers licence.

When Mr. Warner asked why, Rawlins said that he had been adopted by a Bermudian family, and had not received status yet.

Mr. Warner told Rawlins he owed the court $4,750 and said: "You can't work in Bermuda but you can go around doing all this foolishness.'' Mr. Warner remanded Rawlins in custody until the fines were paid.
