Competitiveness -- even though its members have not yet been named.

"There's been a tremendous response,'' said Commission coordinator Mr.

Mansfield (Jim) Brock. "The response has been very positive.

"I've had a whole series of meetings with people so far who have made suggestions.

"And people have been volunteering to help, volunteering to serve, applauding the Premier for having this commission. I've had people write, I've had people telephone with suggestions. There's a very large amount of interest, excitement and positive response.'' The Commission was announced late last month by Premier the Hon. Sir John Swan in a drive to make the Island more competitive. Sir John pointed to problems with the Island's tourism, and expressed fears that Bermuda is losing its lead in both tourism and international business.

"I am sure the time is ripe to for us to reexamine what we are doing now, to see if we can compete more effectively, and to look to the future to ensure our economy starts to grow again and becomes secure,'' he said.

Sir John said he wanted the Commission to look at ways Bermuda could capture the "world's imagination,'' and cited events like the Monte Carlo Grand Prix car race and attractions like Disney World.

The Commission is headed by Sir John and a steering committee of three Cabinet members: Tourism Minister the Hon. C.V. (Jim) Woolridge, Finance Minister the Hon. David Saul, and Management and Information Services Minister the Hon.

Michael Winfield.

The Commission will be divided into three overall areas of responsibility. One committee will take a long-term look at tourism, another will examine the future of international business, while the third will look for new business opportunities for the Island.

Chairmen of the three committees should be announced within two weeks, Mr.

Brock said. and the selection of committee members will be made after that.
