But the Opposition United Bermuda Party urged Premier Jennifer Smith not to make wholesale changes to the boards, saying many of the members could make valuable contributions to the Island.

Public Works Board chairman John Harvey last night told The Royal Gazette he planned to tender his resignation today.

"It's the right thing to,'' said the one-time UBP candidate. "We've got to give her (Premier Jennifer Smith) the freedom to do what's she got to do, to make it comfortable for her.'' In a Press conference last Friday, Ms Smith said it was "customary'' under the Westminster style of government for members of Government boards to stand down when a new government is voted in so "the Government can consider whether to change that system''.

Board And her Ministers would be looking at the boards under their responsibility to determine if any changes were needed, she added.

There are some 108 boards and advisory committees with about 800 members.

So far, Mr. Harvey is the only chairman known to be resigning.

Tourism Board chairman David Hamshere noted his Minister, David Allen, was off the Island.

And he added: "I am not working for just one political party. I am working for Bermuda.'' Meanwhile, UBP chairman Ronald Viera urged "all present members of government boards to do all they can during this transition period and continue to offer their services to both the boards and the Government''.

"We agree with the Progressive Labour Party that full inclusion must be a priority for all of us,'' he said. "We must ensure that every individual who has a positive contribution to make be allowed to do so without reference to political support.

"Decisions dedicated to the aim of inclusion must be based on individual ability. Calls for indiscriminate and wholesale removal from this type of community service are exclusionary.''
