Boat driver charged

which claimed the life of an American visitor was officially charge in Magistrates' Court yesterday.

Jason Edler, of Queen Street, St. George's, was charged with manslaughter in connection with the July 5 death of 54-year-old Frank Westendorf.

Mr. Westendorf, of Newport News, Virginia, died after falling some 100 feet from a parasail belonging to St. George's Parasailing and Watersports. The tragedy occurred off Somers Wharf in St. George's.

Edler, who was not required to enter a plea to the indictable offence, was freed on $5,000 bail plus a surety in like sum.

And Senior Magistrate Will Francis ordered Edler to surrender his travel documents and to report to St. George's Police Station every Monday, Wednesday and Friday between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Edler, who hails from Texas, will return to court on September 16. He is represented by lawyer Phillip Perinchief.
