statistics revealed that in the second quarter of this year construction spending surpassed 1999 levels by a healthy 8.5 percent.

According to the quarterly bulletin of statistics released by Government's statistical department, the total value of new projects was estimated at $36.9 million.

Spending by the public sector was reported to have abated with $3.8 million worth of work completed. Major improvements to roads and the runway at the Bermuda International Airport, were included in those costs.

Building in the private sector remained robust with an estimated $33.1 million being spent. Developers continued on-going work on major projects including the Exel House and Ace Insurance office buildings.

New projects which started during the quarter included new guest units at Pink Beach Club in Tucker's Town, an expansion of the Strawberry Hill condominium community and the office building and warehouse facility at Northcote Ltd.
